Tango Chirimen is a textile characterized by its distinctive "shibo" (textured surface) produced in the Tango region of Kyoto Prefecture.
The Tango region in Kyoto Prefecture is Japan's largest silk textile production area. It is said that textiles have been produced there for approximately 1,300 years.
The rainy climate of Tango is perfect for silk textile production. The area's abundance of water, essential for textile production, and its proximity to Kyoto City where textiles are finished into final products, are cited as reasons why it flourished as a textile production center.
"Shibo" refers to the unique textured surface created by Tango Chirimen's special weaving method. It enhances the beauty of the fabric and provides a soft, pleasant feel against the skin.
